Forest Hill College in Melbourne
A wonderful way to start my Victorian visit was to Forest Hill Secondary College in Burwood East, Melbourne – the 2013 Deafness Forum’s Captioning Awards winner of Organisational Commitment to Captions. This was an incredible win for a school and reflects the College’s commitment to captioned access. My visit gave me a closer look at how the College achieves and maintains this high level of access to the curriculum for its students.
A train trip to Bendigo
A relaxing 2 hour train trip on a cold Melbourne morning to visit Bendigo South East College Deaf Facility, which houses the Captioning Centre of the Victorian Deaf Education Institute. Lots of fun looking at captioning software and sharing of ideas.
The University of Melbourne, Graduate School of Education
Stimulating meeting at the University of Melbourne around captions in education.
Victorian Deaf Education Institute
‘The Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) was established to enable excellence in deaf education throughout Victoria’
Great meetings and visit with lots of discussion and brainstorming of ideas around building of teacher capacity.
Catholic Education Melbourne
A couple of meetings and an opportunity for my presentation on captions in education, to Visiting Teachers – hearing impairment, vision impairment, chronic health and physical disability, with lots of discussion and sharing about teaching with captions.
St Mary’s College for Hearing Impaired Students
(integrated into St John’s Regional College, Dandenong – a partner school)
St Mary’s is a registered special school for students from Prep to Year 12 which operates four campuses alongside four partner schools.
A great visit and meeting with staff, with discussions about captions in schools and my presentation that focussed on accessing and using captions to teach skills and concepts.
